Yes, you are able to schedule a knowledge class D test for your aunt and accompany her to the test as a translator. The DMV does not require that you be a certified translator, but they do require that you be able to translate the test instructions and questions into your aunt’s native language.
To schedule a knowledge class D test for your aunt, you can either call the DMV at (504) 796-9000 or make an appointment online at their website: http://www.expresslane.org/
When scheduling the appointment, be sure to let the DMV know that your aunt will need a translator. They will be able to make arrangements for a translator to be present at the test.
On the day of the test, you will need to arrive with your aunt at least 30 minutes early. She will need to bring a valid form of identification, such as a passport or driver’s license, and proof of residency in Louisiana.
You will also need to bring your own identification. The translator will not be allowed to take the test with your aunt, so you will need to wait outside the testing room.
Once the test is complete, the translator will be able to explain the results to your aunt. If your aunt passes the test, she will be able to apply for a driver’s license.
