To get an Alaska driver’s license, you need to: 

  • Pass a written knowledge test
  • Pass a vision test
  • Pass a road test if required
  • Provide proof of legal name, date of birth, current residence address, and social security number
  • Pass an alcohol and drug awareness test if you are 21 or older
  • Surrender your out-of-state driver’s license

You can renew your Alaska driver’s license online. You can also exchange a provisional license for a full Class D driver’s license at a local DMV office after turning 18 and having held a provisional license for at least six months. 

To apply for a REAL ID card, you need to present one primary document that shows your date of birth, full name, identity, and U.S. citizenship or lawful status.
