Do I need a reservation to come renew my driver’s license? I already have a Real ID.
December 16, 2025
Whether you need a reservation depends on your specific state and how you choose to renew. However, because you already have a Real ID, you have a significant advantage: you likely don’t need to go to the DMV at all.
1. You likely can renew online
Since your documents (identity, social security, and residency) were already verified when you first got your Real ID, most states allow you to renew online or via a mobile app.
- Check your mail: Most states send a renewal notice that will tell you if you are “eligible for online renewal.”
- In-person requirements: You typically only need to go in person if you need a new photo (usually required every 8–12 years), if your vision has changed, or if you are over a certain age (often 64+ or 70+).
2. If you must go in person
If you prefer to go in person or are required to do so:
- Appointments: Many states (like California, Texas, and New Jersey) still strongly encourage or require appointments for all in-person visits to manage wait times.
- Walk-ins: Some states allow walk-ins but warn of long wait times. Others have shifted to an “appointment-only” model for license services.
- Real ID Status: Since you already have the “Gold Star,” you shouldn’t need to bring all your original birth certificates or passports again—just your current license and payment.
3. What to check now
To get a definitive answer for your specific location:
- Search for “[Your State] DMV license renewal” online.
- Look for a button that says “Renew Online” first.
- If you must go in, look for “Schedule an Appointment” on the official state website.
Note: As of May 7, 2025, you will officially need that Real ID (or a passport) to board domestic flights, so it’s great that you already have yours!
