I bought a car from a dealership May 10, 2024. I still have not received my license plates, and it is 9/19/2024. My temporary plates are expired. What do I need to do to get license plates?

A) It’s unusual for a dealership to take this long to process license plates. There could be several reasons for the delay. Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Contact the Dealership:
    • Follow up: Reach out to the dealership’s sales department or customer service. Ask for an update on the status of your license plates.
    • Request documentation: If possible, request copies of the paperwork they’ve submitted to the DMV. This can help you determine if there’s an issue with the application.
  2. Check with the DMV:
    • Online: Visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website. They often have online tools or a phone number where you can check the status of your registration.
    • In person: If you’re unable to find the information online, consider visiting a DMV office. They may be able to provide more specific details.
  3. Verify Insurance:
    • Ensure coverage: Make sure your insurance is active and up-to-date. The DMV often requires proof of insurance before issuing license plates.
  4. Check for Fees or Taxes:
    • Outstanding payments: Verify that there are no outstanding fees or taxes related to the vehicle purchase. These can delay the issuance of license plates.
  5. Consider Legal Action:
    • If necessary: If the dealership is unresponsive or has failed to meet their obligations, you may need to consult with an attorney. They can advise you on your legal options.

Remember to be persistent and polite in your communication. By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the issue and obtain your license plates promptly.
