“I have found someone’s valid MI driver’s license on a road shoulder in Sand Lake. What should I do with it? I tried to find phone numbers of the license holder but all 5 numbers are disconnected with no forwarding numbers.”

Since you found a Michigan driver’s license and are unable to contact the owner directly, the best course of action is to turn it over to the proper authorities.
Here’s what you should do:
- Contact the Michigan Secretary of State: The Michigan Secretary of State (SOS) is responsible for issuing driver’s licenses. You can contact them and explain that you found a lost license. They may be able to contact the owner or provide instructions on where to send it. You can find their contact information on their official website (michigan.gov/sos). Their general contact number is 888-SOS-MICH (888-767-6424).
- Turn it in to a local police department: You can also take the license to any local police department or Sheriff’s office in Michigan. They have procedures for handling lost and found items, and they can attempt to return it to the owner.
Do not try to mail it to the address on the license yourself, as this could be a security risk for the individual. Turning it over to official channels is the most secure and effective way to ensure it gets back to its rightful owner.
