I haven’t received the form to renew my license sticker. How can I get my sticker for 2026?
July 20, 2025
Even if you don’t receive a renewal notice, you’re still responsible for renewing your license sticker and any associated fees or penalties will still apply. The good news is that you can still get your 2026 sticker without the physical form.
Here’s how you can typically renew your license sticker without the paper renewal notice:
- Online: Many states offer online renewal services. You’ll usually need your license plate number, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), and/or your driver’s license number. Some states also require a “Letter ID” or “Renewal ID” which you might be able to obtain by calling their DMV/Department of Revenue.
- In Person: Visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), Secretary of State, or County Tag Office. Bring your current registration card (if you have it), your driver’s license, proof of insurance, and any required emissions inspection certificates.
- Self-Service Kiosks: Some states have self-service kiosks where you can renew your registration and print your sticker on the spot. You’ll typically need your license plate number or VIN, and a valid driver’s license.
- By Mail: While you don’t have the renewal notice, you might be able to mail in a completed renewal form (which you can often download from your state’s DMV website) along with your payment and other required documents.
What you’ll generally need:
- License plate number or VIN number
- Driver’s license number
- Proof of liability insurance (and often it needs to be on file electronically with the state)
- A passing emissions inspection certificate (if your county/state requires it)
- Payment (credit/debit card, electronic check, or cash/check in person/by mail)
Important Notes:
- Check your state’s specific requirements: The exact process and required documents can vary by state. It’s always best to check your state’s official DMV or Department of Revenue website for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
- Don’t wait: Renew your registration before it expires to avoid late fees or potential citations.
- Keep records: Always keep copies of your renewal confirmation and any documents for your records.
