Identity theft last week. Still have license but they have a copy of it. I understand I need to appear in person to either change number or get a new license. Are their any other documents required? Presently on hold to speak with someone.

It’s very wise to take immediate action after identity theft, especially when your driver’s license is involved. Here’s a breakdown of the typical documentation you’ll need, keeping in mind that requirements can vary by state:

General Document Requirements:

  • Proof of Identity:
    • This often includes a certified birth certificate, valid passport, or other government-issued identification.
  • Proof of Social Security Number:
    • Your Social Security card, a W-2 form, or a pay stub with your SSN.
  • Proof of Residency:
    • Utility bills, bank statements, or lease agreements showing your current address.
  • Police Report:
    • A police report documenting the identity theft is crucial. This serves as official evidence of the crime.
  • Current Driver’s License:
    • Even though it is compromised, it is still a form of identification.
  • Documentation of the Identity Theft:
    • Any other documents that help prove you are a victim of identity theft.

Key Considerations:

  • State-Specific Requirements:
    • DMV regulations vary significantly from state to state. It’s essential to check your state’s DMV website for precise requirements.
    • The need to comply with Real ID requirements will also add to the documentation needed.
  • Real ID Compliance:
    • If you want a Real ID-compliant license, you’ll need to provide extra documentation, such as proof of legal presence in the U.S.
  • Police Report Importance:
    • A police report is very important in cases of identity theft, as it provides official documentation of the crime.

Recommendations:

  • Contact Your State’s DMV Directly:
    • While you’re on hold, have the DMV website for your state pulled up on another device.
    • They will have the most up to date and accurate information.
  • Gather Documents in Advance:
    • Collect all the documents you think you might need before your in-person visit. This will save you time and potential frustration.

I hope this helps, and I wish you a swift resolution to this difficult situation.
