My state, Iowa, requires a title for my horse trailer due to it being over 2000 pounds. I’m working to get a bonded title in Iowa, but they are very backed up and I’m wondering if there’s any way to get a replacement title from Kansas.

It’s generally not possible to get a replacement title from Kansas for a horse trailer that is now located in and needs to be titled in Iowa. Here’s why and what your options are:

  • Titles are issued by the state where the vehicle is primarily located and registered. Since your horse trailer is in Iowa and needs to be titled there, Iowa is the state responsible for issuing its title.
  • Replacement titles come from the issuing state. If your trailer previously had a Kansas title and it was lost, stolen, or mutilated, you would normally apply for a duplicate title directly from the Kansas Department of Revenue. However, this is for a trailer that is still in Kansas or was last titled there and you’re trying to get a replacement of that specific Kansas title.
  • Moving to Iowa requires an Iowa title. When you move a vehicle (including a trailer over a certain weight) into Iowa, you are required to title and register it in Iowa. They will need proof of ownership, which is why you’re going through the bonded title process.

Why a bonded title in Iowa is your path forward:

A bonded title is specifically designed for situations where you don’t have the original title but can prove ownership. The bond protects the state and any previous owners in case someone else later claims ownership of the trailer.

While Iowa’s bonded title process may be backed up, it’s the correct legal procedure for your situation. The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) or Department of Natural Resources (DNR) (depending on the type of trailer) will investigate to ensure there are no outstanding liens or claims on the trailer before issuing the bonded title. The process generally involves:

  1. Taking photos of the vehicle.
  2. Gathering ownership documentation. (e.g., bill of sale, canceled check)
  3. Applying for a bonded title with the Iowa DOT/DNR.
  4. A title record search by the Iowa DOT/DNR. They may notify the last registered owner if one is found.
  5. Vehicle inspection (if required).
  6. Purchasing a surety bond. This bond is typically 1.5 times the determined value of the trailer.

The Iowa bonded title process for trailers can take at least 12 weeks for investigation by the DNR, and potentially faster for regular vehicle bonded titles from the DOT.

In summary: You must pursue the bonded title through the Iowa DOT or DNR, as they are the governing body for titling vehicles in your current state of residence. Trying to obtain a replacement title from Kansas for a trailer you’re trying to title in Iowa is not the correct approach.
