My wallet was stolen and my social security card was taken. What do I do?
This is a very serious situation because of the risk of identity theft, so you need to act quickly. Here are the immediate and essential steps you should take:
- Report the Social Security Card Theft
Report to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC): The FTC will help you create an Identity Theft Report and a personal recovery plan.
Website: IdentityTheft.gov
Phone: 1-877-IDTHEFT (1-877-438-4338)
- Contact Credit Reporting Agencies
Place a Fraud Alert or Credit Freeze: This is crucial to prevent someone from opening new accounts in your name.
You only need to contact one of the three major credit bureaus to place an initial one-year Fraud Alert; they are legally required to notify the other two.
A Credit Freeze offers stronger protection by restricting access to your credit report, making it difficult for new credit to be opened. You must contact all three agencies separately to place a freeze.
Contact Information:
Equifax: 1-888-298-0045
Experian: 1-888-397-3742
TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289
Monitor Your Credit: Get a copy of your credit report from each bureau to check for any suspicious activity. You are entitled to a free report from each once every 12 months at AnnualCreditReport.com.
- Contact Your Financial Institutions
Call your bank(s) and credit card companies immediately to report the theft.
They will cancel your missing debit/credit cards and issue replacements with new numbers.
Review your accounts for any suspicious or unauthorized transactions and dispute them.
- File a Police Report
File a report with the police department where the theft occurred.
A police report can serve as official documentation of the crime, which may be needed by creditors or other agencies as you clear up fraudulent activity.
- Replace Other Important Documents
Driver’s License/State ID: Contact your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to report it stolen and apply for a replacement.
Social Security Card: Contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) to request a replacement card. You can start the process online on the SSA website to see if you qualify, or contact them by phone.
SSA Phone: 1-800-772-1213
Speed is essential in these steps. The faster you act, the less damage a thief can do with your information.
