How do I remove my organ donor status on my driver’s license?
December 23, 2025
Removing your organ donor status is a two-step process. Simply removing the “Donor” symbol from your physical license does not necessarily remove you from the official state or national registries, which are what hospitals check.
To ensure your choice is fully recorded, you should follow both steps below:
1. Update Your Physical Driver’s License
In most states, the “Donor” designation (often a heart symbol) is printed on your license. To remove it:
- Visit the DMV: You usually have to go in person to request a duplicate or replacement license.
- Fill out an Application: On the renewal or replacement form, check the box that says “No” or “Remove” regarding organ donation.
- Pay a Fee: Note that most states charge a fee for a replacement license if it isn’t time for your regular renewal yet.
2. Remove Yourself from the Registry
This is the most critical step, as medical teams look at the electronic registry rather than just your ID card.
- State Registry: Go to Donate Life America and select your state. Most states allow you to log in and “Remove” or “De-register” your name online.
- National Registry: If you signed up online at RegisterMe.org, you should log in there as well to remove your registration.
- iPhone Health App: If you ever signed up via your iPhone, open the Health App → Tap your Profile Picture → Organ Donation → Edit to remove your status.
Important Considerations
- Inform Your Family: In many cases, if your status is unclear, medical teams will consult your next of kin. Make sure your family or legal representative is aware of your decision so they can honor your wishes.
- Living Will: If you have a “Living Will” or “Advance Directive,” you may want to update those documents to explicitly state your preferences regarding organ and tissue donation.
