I’m trying to make an appointment for a driving test in Ottawa and everything within 75 miles has no appointments available in September and October is not yet available to make any appointment. Why is it necessary for me to drive into Chicago or go down to central/southern Illinois to take a test. I never minded the wait but now with the secretary of states new policy on appointments only taking effect on Sept.1, 2023, it’s really going to make things impossible to get service at my local DMV office.

I understand your frustration. It is inconvenient to have to travel long distances to take a driving test. The Illinois Secretary of State (SOS) has implemented a new policy requiring appointments for all driver’s license and ID card services, including driving tests. This policy is being implemented to improve efficiency and reduce wait times at DMV offices.

The SOS is aware that some people may have difficulty finding appointments, especially in rural areas. They are working to increase the number of available appointments, but it may take some time to make a noticeable difference.

In the meantime, here are a few things you can do to try to get an appointment:

  • Check the SOS website frequently for cancellations. Appointments are released on a rolling basis, so it is worth checking back often.
  • Be flexible with your date and time. If you are able to take the test on a weekday or during off-peak hours, you may have better luck finding an appointment.
  • Consider taking the test at a facility that is further away. There may be more availability at facilities in larger cities.
  • Contact the SOS customer service line at 1-844-817-4649. They may be able to help you find an appointment.
